Question: What life insurance company is headquartered in Waco’s tallest building?

Answer: American Amicable Group, previously known as the Amicable Life Insurance Company (ALICO). Founded in 1910, the company built a 22-story steel tower in Waco the following year. The ALICO building was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River and south of the Mason-Dixon Line until 1929. It was one of the only structures to survive a tornado that claimed 114 lives in 1953, and it served as a staging area for subsequent search and rescue efforts. In 1982, the ALICO building was designated a historical landmark by the Texas State Historical Commission.
