Question: What longtime track and field coach for the University of Texas was also the school’s head football coach?
Answer: Clyde Littlefield
Born in Pennsylvania in 1892, he moved with his family to Spindletop in 1904 and graduated from South Park High School in Beaumont. While a student at the University of Texas, he earned twelve letters in football, basketball, and track.
After a brief stint coaching at Greenville High School, Littlefield returned to UT, where he coached track and field for the next 41 years. He was also the head football coach from 1927 to 1933. Littlefield cofounded the annual Texas Relays track meet at UT, and he was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, the Longhorn Hall of Honor, and the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.
