Question: Where is the largest free-standing cross in Texas?
Answer: Groom. The 190-foot, 1,250-ton structure, called “The Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ,” was erected near I-40 in 1995. Its construction, which took more than 100 welders eight months to complete, was funded by Steve and Bobby Thomas. The cross is part of an exhibit that includes an amphitheater, a visitor center, and 14 life-sized sculptures depicting the events of Passion Week. The cross can be seen for 20 miles.
