Question: How did The Big Bopper get his stage name?
Answer: The name comes from a popular 1950s dance called The Bop. J. P. Richardson Jr. dropped out of college to work at Beaumont radio station KTRM (now KZZB) in 1949. After two years of service in the U.S. Army at Fort Bliss, he returned to the station. Richardson adopted the name when he became host of the afternoon show in 1957.
