Question: How many Texas counties are in the Mountain Time Zone?

Answer: Two: El Paso and Hudspeth. Following the Standard Time Act of 1918, the Interstate Commerce Commission assigned the western half of the state to Mountain Time and the eastern half to Central Time. An amendment in 1921 established Central Time as the standard for all of Texas, but El Paso continued to follow Mountain Time. It wasn’t until 1970 that El Paso and Hudspeth counties were officially assigned to Mountain Time.
