Question: What distillery is named after a skeleton discovered during the construction of a Central Texas highway in 1982?

Answer: Leanderthal Distilling. TxDOT crews discovered the remains during site prep for RM 1431 in Williamson County. The skeleton was determined to be that of a woman between the ages of 18 and 30. Archeologists named the discovery “Leanderthal Lady” or “Leanne” after the nearby city of Leander. Her remains were transported to the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory at UT Austin.

In 2018, Scott Calame, the owner of Square Peg Distilling, changed the name of his Leander company to Leanderthal Distilling.
