The 18,000-pound structure was built in 2010 by Chicago-based artist Tony Tasset, who said he “wanted to make something that speaks to a lot of people.” It has become a major tourist attraction since it was installed on a plot of land owned by the Joule Hotel in 2013. The site was previously occupied by what was likely the state’s first skyscraper, the 15-story Praetorian Building, which was constructed in 1909.
