Question: What military post in Texas operated 12 nearby missile launch sites during the Cold War?
Answer: Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene. In 1961, a dozen 185-foot-deep missile silos were installed in and around Abilene, each of which was operated around the clock by a five-man crew. The underground silos housed the 82-foot Atlas rocket, which could deliver a nuclear warhead to nearly anywhere in the Soviet Union. The sites were decommissioned in 1965 with the development of more advanced intercontinental ballistic missiles.
One of the silos, the Lawn Atlas Missile Base (LAMB), has been restored by military enthusiast Larry Sanders. It received a historical marker in 2008.
