Question: What Texas governor opposed secession but later served as a general in the Confederate Army?
Answer: James W. Throckmorton. He was one of only eight delegates at the Texas Secession Convention to vote against seceding from the United States. Nevertheless, he served as a captain and brigadier general in the Confederate Army, participating in the battles at Chustennallah and Elkhorn.
After the war, he easily defeated Radical Republican Elisha M. Pease to win the governorship in 1866. However, he was removed from office the following year on the orders of Philip Sheridan, the U.S. military commander for the state, due to allegations of being too lenient toward former Confederates.
