Article Icon 1Tip Line Set Up to Report Missing Lawmakers

The Texas House convened at 1 p.m. yesterday but was yet again short of a quorum, with 97 members present. More than fifty Democrats left the state over a week ago to block a mid-decade congressional redistricting plan.

Speaker Dustin Burrows said that Department of Public Safety officers have been deployed across the state to look for absent lawmakers and are monitoring their homes in case they return. He shared a tip line phone number people can call to report the location of quorum-breaking Democrats.

Burrows mentioned that a number of bills related to flood preparedness and response had been placed on today’s calendar

Will you be in that chair to vote for these critical disaster recovery bills, or will you be remembered as one who did not show up? The choice is yours,” Burrows said.

Article Icon 1New Laws Affecting Public School Families

Public school students and families will be affected by several new state laws as the school year begins.

Among the most prominent changes is a cellphone ban for students. Several districts had already imposed restrictions on cell phone use, arguing that it reduces distractions. Schools have until Sept. 18 to implement a plan.

Every public school classroom will now be required to display a 16-by-20-inch poster of the Ten Commandments, and school districts must vote on designating a time for Bible reading and prayer. Lawsuits have been filed challenging the poster requirement, but no rulings have been issued.

Public schools are also prohibited from implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs or providing instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity. Parents must opt in for their students to receive sex education, and they can provide input on school library catalogs.

Six Texas schools made ESPN’s list of the top 40 football recruiting classes in the nation. The ordering was determined by the number of top-ranked commitments each school received from the 300 best recruits from the Class of 2026.

Texas A&M leads the way at No. 3, with 15 commits from the ESPN 300 list. The recruiting class includes home-grown running backs K.J. Edwards and Jonathan Hatton Jr. as well as California’s No. 1-ranked athlete, Brandon Arrington.

Texas nabbed the No. 4 spot with 14 commits, including quarterback Dia Bell—the son of former NBA star Raja Bell—and the state’s No. 3 recruit, wide receiver Jermaine Bishop Jr.

SMU secured five commits from the list, good for the No. 20 spot. At No. 26, Texas Tech has two commits, including the state’s No. 2 recruit, offensive tackle Felix Ojo. Baylor ranks 27th with four commits, and TCU ranks 40th with one.
