Article Icon 1Karmelo Anthony Found Guilty of Murder

A Collin County jury on Tuesday found Karmelo Anthony guilty of murder in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a Frisco ISD track meet, ending a trial that drew national attention and sparked debate over self-defense, race, and school safety.

Anthony, now 19, stabbed Metcalf once in the chest during an April 2, 2025, confrontation at Kuykendall Stadium after witnesses said Metcalf told Anthony to leave the Memorial High School team tent. Prosecutors called it a provoked “sneak attack.” Defense attorneys argued Anthony acted in a split second of fear and never called him to testify.

Jurors heard from dozens of witnesses over five days of trial, including students who saw the confrontation and the medical examiner who said the wound pierced Metcalf’s heart. The judge allowed jurors to consider a lesser manslaughter charge, but they convicted on murder.

The jury sentenced Anthony to 35 years in prison. He will be eligible for parole after half of that time is served.

Article Icon 1Texas Power Grid Braces for Record Summer

Texas is on track to set a new all-time electricity demand record this summer, driven by extreme heat and an unprecedented boom in data centers across the state.

ERCOT—which manages the grid for about 90% of Texas—forecasts that peak demand could jump nearly 10% above last year. The agency’s vice president of system operations said officials expect a hotter summer than 2025.

Last year’s peak summer demand for ERCOT reached 83.7 gigawatts on August 18, and the all-time peak demand of 85.5 gigawatts was recorded on August 10, 2023. ERCOT is confident the grid will hold.

Article Icon 1SpaceX Demanding Tax Breaks

SpaceX is warning that, without significant property tax abatements from local school districts near its planned Terafab chip facility in Grimes County, the project could leave the state entirely.

Grimes County commissioners voted on June 3 to approve a reinvestment zone and abatement deal—but school districts must act separately. SpaceX has not yet filed for permits or signed the county’s agreement.

Documents filed with local districts reveal the scope of SpaceX’s demands and the stakes: Terafab would be one of the most consequential economic investments in Texas history, bringing billions in capital and hundreds of jobs to rural Central Texas.
