Good Morning! On this day in 1897, the first official annual meeting of the Texas State Historical Association was held at the University of Texas in Austin.
In Sunday’s edition, our trivia question linked to the wrong answer. The largest medical center in the world is Texas Medical Center in Houston—not the Waco Suspension Bridge. Sorry to leave you hanging.

Abbott Signs Property Tax Cut Measures
Gov. Greg Abbott signed a package of property tax relief bills yesterday in Denton. He was joined by State Rep. Morgan Meyer (R-Dallas) and State Sen. Paul Bettencourt (R-Houston), key lawmakers who advocated for the legislation’s passage.
Senate Bill 4 increases the homestead exemption for school property taxes from $100,000 to $140,000 for all homeowners, providing a projected average annual savings of $484. Senate Bill 23 raises the exemption to $200,000 for those who are disabled or age 65 and older, providing an average annual savings of at least $950 to more than 2 million homeowners.
House Bill 9 increases the exemption for business personal property from $2,500 to $125,000. To take effect, each measure requires voters to approve related constitutional amendments in November.
“No state in the history of America has devoted such a large percentage of their budget to tax relief in the United States of America. And as far as I’m concerned, we’re not done yet,” said Abbott.
At Home Files for Bankruptcy
At Home, a furniture and home decor retailer based in Coppell, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy yesterday, citing economic challenges from rising interest rates, “persistent inflation,” and costs associated with tariffs.
The company has closed six underperforming stores within the past year and will close another 26 across the U.S. by Sept. 30. At Home currently operates 260 stores in 40 states.
The bankruptcy filing aims to restructure nearly $2 billion in debt by transferring ownership of the company to a group of hedge funds and investment firms in New York and San Francisco.
North Texas Husbands Pranked on Father’s Day
More than 200 moms at St. Anne’s Catholic Parish in Coppell pulled off a masterful prank over the weekend. They purchased the same polo shirt and asked their husbands to wear it for mass on Father’s Day.
Kristen Combo, a mom with over 11,000 followers on Instagram, documented the men’s reactions. “The confusion. The double-takes. The utter denial. And then—the laughter.”
The church’s priest even got in on the action. The teal shirt is sold by Catholic apparel company Sock Religious and retails for $65.99.
“Never underestimate Catholic moms,” Combo wrote.
