Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee Has Cancer

U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee released a statement Sunday saying she is undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer.

The 74-year-old Democrat has represented Houston’s 18th Congressional District for 30 years. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 but announced she was cancer-free the following year.

Last year, she ran an unsuccessful campaign for Houston mayor, losing by a large margin to former Democrat State Sen. John Whitmire.

“The road ahead will not be easy, but I stand in faith that God will strengthen me,” Lee said in a statement.

Henry Cuellar Targeted By NRCC

On Monday, the National Republican Congressional Committee announced it is targeting Democrat Rep. Henry Cuellar’s seat in the November election.

The group, which works to elect Republicans to the U.S. House, had previously declined to get involved in the race, but an NRCC official said the Laredo congressman’s indictment on federal bribery and money laundering charges has cracked the door open for Cuellar’s opponent, retired Navy officer Jay Furman.

Cuellar’s district, which stretches from San Antonio to Laredo, voted for Joe Biden over Donald Trump by 7 percent in 2020.

Percentage Of Native-Born Texans Decreasing

According a recent Houston Chronicle analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data, only 51% of Texas adults were born in the Lone Star State, a figure that has been trending down since the 1940s, when around 7 out of every 10 Texans at least 18 or older were born here.

Around 26% of Texas adults were born in another state, with California leading the way at 3.7%. Foreign-born Texans make up 23% of the state’s population.

State demographer Lloyd Potter said “we’re not that far away now” from native-born Texans being a minority in the state.

➤ East Texas: Over 15,000 people were without power Monday morning after thunderstorms moved through the region Sunday evening. In a Facebook post, Deep East Texas Electric Cooperative said they plan to restore power to all customers this evening. (More)
