Rick Perry’s Energy Company Files for IPO
Fermi America, the energy development company co-founded by former Texas governor and U.S. Energy Secretary Rick Perry, has filed for an initial public offering on the Nasdaq.
In June, Fermi and Texas Tech announced a partnership to develop a massive 11-gigawatt energy and data center campus on approximately 5,800 acres in Amarillo. Dubbed “Project Matador,” the 18 million-square-foot data center is expected to become the largest in the world.
The company has already acquired 600 megawatts of natural gas power for the site and has signed agreements with Westinghouse and South Korean firms Hyundai and Doosan Enerbility to deploy nuclear reactors.
The terms of the IPO have not yet been specified. Last month, Fermi closed a $100 million round of funding led by Australian investment bank Macquarie Group.
Deputy Fired for Pulling Gun During Dispute
A Harris County deputy has been fired after she brandished her weapon during a family dispute last month while she was off-duty but in uniform. A grand jury will determine if criminal charges are warranted.
On August 5, Precinct 1 Deputy Brittany Brown allegedly pursued her sister’s former fiancé in a personal vehicle after he left the house with her phone. A video recorded by the man, Michael Evans, shows Brown threatening him with her service pistol at a stoplight.
Brown was reassigned to desk duty pending an internal investigation. Her attorney previously claimed Brown thought Evans had kidnapped her sister.
“She just jumped out the driver’s door at that point planted the gun in my face,” recounted Evans. “She was using her service pistol and uniform to bully and oppress me.”
Garland Hosts Third Texas Film Festival
Garland is hosting its third It Came From Texas film festival this weekend. This year’s theme is True Texas Tales, and the festival will feature historical films and speakers who will provide expert insight on the events they portray.
The lineup includes award-winning films Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Denzel Washington’s The Great Debaters (2007), and John Wayne’s The Alamo (1960). Among the scheduled speakers are Bonnie’s niece, Rhea Leen Linder, and Wayne’s granddaughter, Anita La Cava Swift.
Other showings include the comedies Bernie (2011) and Viva Max! (1969)—films about a 1996 murder in East Texas and Mexico’s fictional attempt to recapture San Antonio in 1969—and documentaries about the 1935 Wiley College debate team and the John F. Kennedy assassination.
All-access passes to the three-day festival are $75, and individual tickets can be purchased for $10-$20. The event and showings will be held at the Plaza Theatre.
