Gonzales Resigns from Congress
U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-San Antonio) resigned from office yesterday amid fallout from an affair with a staffer who later died by suicide last year.
Gonzales admitted to the affair and dropped his bid for reelection shortly after the March 3 primary, when he was forced into a runoff with gun rights activist Brandon Herrera.
Faced with the possibility of being expelled by his colleagues if he didn’t relinquish his seat, Gonzales announced his intent to “retire” on Monday without specifying a timeline for his departure.
The congressman’s resignation coincided with that of former U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell, a California Democrat who was a leading contender for governor before a series of sexual abuse allegations rocked his campaign and elicited calls for his removal from Congress.
Following Tuesday’s resignations, Republicans hold a slim majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. Gov. Greg Abbott has not yet indicated when he plans to call a special election to replace Gonzales.
Houston ICE Policy Jeopardizes State Funding
Houston Mayor John Whitmire is calling for the repeal of a new ordinance that bars police officers from holding suspects with immigration warrants for ICE after Gov. Greg Abbott threatened to withhold $110 million in public safety funding from the city.
Last week, the city council voted 12-5 to eliminate a 30-minute window for ICE agents to pick up suspects accused of entering the country illegally. Whitmire supported the new ordinance, saying, “It makes a statement that we listened.”
On Monday, Abbott’s Public Safety Office informed Whitmire that the city is out of compliance with the terms of $110 million in state grants, which must be repaid if the ordinance isn’t repealed within a week. Attorney General Ken Paxton has also launched an investigation to determine whether the policy violates state law.
“We’ve got to correct that policy,” Whitmire said yesterday following remarks about this year’s World Cup. “There’s only one opinion that matters, and that’s the governor’s.” A special city council meeting has been scheduled for Friday.
Baylor Opens Arctic Research Facility
Baylor University has opened a first-of-its-kind research facility to study the effects of Arctic conditions on U.S. troops who could be deployed there.
The federally funded ARKTOS Research Center houses a chamber in which the temperature can be lowered to 31 degrees below zero and the oxygen level adjusted to replicate a high-altitude environment. A motion simulation chamber is also being developed.
Baylor is partnering with Fort Hood and ROTC programs to study how cold-weather conditions affect sleep patterns, mental performance, and medical equipment. “We’re gonna be there a lot more in the future,” said Jason R. Carter, Dean of the Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences.
“Underneath the ice and the ocean is a tremendous amount of resources, and our adversaries know that,” said U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Waco), who helped secure funding for the project. “The men and women, the fighting forces of this nation, need to be prepared as they move to that threshold.”
