The Roundup

Article Icon 1Texans Assess Hurricane Damage

Millions of Texans are assessing the damage and trying to recover from Hurricane Beryl, which caused widespread destruction and left at least eight people dead after making landfall Monday.

As of Monday afternoon, over 1.9 million homes are without power. CenterPoint Energy, the Houston area’s largest electricity provider, mobilized approximately 11,500 workers for restoration efforts.

The storm triggered a record 67 tornado warnings in East Texas, and multiple law enforcement agencies are experiencing phone line outages due to carrier issues.

In Houston, NRG Stadium’s retractable roof lost several panels. Coastal communities—particularly Matagorda County, where Beryl came ashore—are cleaning up significant damage to homes and businesses.

Article Icon 1Pest Control Leads to Trafficking Arrests

A pest control company that came to a home with almost no furniture but filled with suitcases, electronics, and a dozen young women led to the arrest of four people for human trafficking.

An arrest affidavit from the Princeton Police said the victims were promised internships to learn computer programming and get help applying for tech jobs, but when they were hired, their wages were paid to a shell company.

Police Chief James Waters said his department has been working with federal investigators for several months, and more arrests are expected. Addresses in McKinney, Melissa, and other cities in the region are also believed to be connected to the operation.

Article Icon 1Celebs Flock to Texas, Buying Homes

Texas has become an increasingly popular destination for celebrities seeking new homes and lifestyles.

In May, supermodel Bella Hadid purchased a home in Fort Worth, where she frequently participates in rodeo events with her boyfriend, professional horseman Adan Banuelos.

NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal expanded his Texas real estate portfolio in April by acquiring a 4,670-square-foot Mediterranean-style home in Rockwall County, adding to his existing property bought in Carrollton in 2022.

Rapper and pop star Drake joined the trend, buying a sprawling 313-acre ranch called The Inn at Dos Brisas in Washington County for $15 million.
