An earthquake rattled West Texas Monday night, and people in Austin, Dallas, and Oklahoma City reported being able to feel it.

Rated a 4.9 on the Richter Scale, it was the eighth-strongest earthquake recorded in the state.

The epicenter was about 54 miles northwest of Abilene at a relatively shallow depth of 4.8 miles beneath the surface.

“I ain’t gonna lie to you, I was a little scared,” a Snyder resident confessed.

A 4.4-magnitude aftershock occurred a few minutes after the initial quake at 10:38 pm, and a 3.1-magnitude tremor was recorded in the early morning hours. No injuries or damage to property were reported.
