Article Icon 1Cruz and Allred Debate in Dallas

Sen. Ted Cruz faced off against Rep. Colin Allred Tuesday night in the first and only debate in what is shaping up to be a tight race between the Republican incumbent and the former NFL linebacker and three-term Democratic Congressman.

The two candidates fielded questions on the issues of abortion, the border, inflation, foreign aid, and transgender rights during the hour-long debate held in the studio of a Dallas TV station.

Allred attacked Cruz for questioning the results of the 2020 election and vacationing in Cancún during the 2021 winter storm, and Cruz went after Allred for supporting the policies of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

A new poll from the University of Houston Hobby School of Public Affairs shows Cruz leading Allred by 4 percentage points among 1,329 likely voters.

Article Icon 1Hurricane Insurance Rate Hike Rejected

The Texas Department of Insurance rejected a 10% rate hike proposed by the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association, the state’s insurer of last resort for around a quarter-million residential and commercial property owners along the Texas coast.

The not-for-profit organization said current premiums are about 38% less than adequate for residential policies and 45% inadequate for commercial policies. Claims for damage inflicted by Hurricane Beryl have depleted more than half of TWIA’s reserves.

TDI Commissioner Cassie Brown called the proposed rate increase “unjust and unfair” to coastal communities, noting that all but three of the 492 comments submitted to the agency opposed it.

Brown suggested legislators should address TWIA’s funding when they reconvene during next year’s session.

Article Icon 1Sheriff’s Deputy Wrangles Gator

Deputies in Victoria responded to a call about an “errant” 8-foot alligator hanging out at a convenience store in Placedo on Monday.

In a Facebook post, the sheriff’s department described how one deputy, Corporal Parma, wrangled the beast almost entirely by himself, having watched 12 episodes of the TV show Gator Boys.

Parma can be seen wearing a cowboy hat and sunglasses while holding the gator by its snout.

A game warden transported the wayward reptile to a safe location for release.

For All the Good Boys and Girls

This brand of dog food beats traditional kibbles 39-0 in a third-party taste test. What’s your pup waiting for?

Sundays is no regular dog food. Their recipes stick to a short list of human-grade meats, fruits, and vegetables to ensure dogs are fed to a higher standard. And unlike other human-grade dog foods, Sundays needs no fridge, no prep, no cleanup, and no hassle.

Just pour into a bowl and watch your pup devour it. Because every batch is made and air-dried in the US for over 11 hours, these tasty jerky-style pieces retain maximum nutrition to help your dog look and feel its best (while loving what they are eating).

It’s time to try the Sundays challenge: let your pup decide between Sundays and your current dog food. We’re pretty sure we know who’s going to win. Enjoy 40% off your first order with code TEXASFLYOVER.
