The Texas State Board of Education gave final approval Friday to new high school social studies standards covering U.S. history, government, and world geography. Dozens of speakers testified across hours of meetings, most opposing the final version.
The standards attribute the Sept. 11 attacks to “radical Islam” rather than to the specific terrorist groups involved. Students will also study early Islam through Muhammad’s “brutal military campaigns against Jewish and Christian tribes” and the “normalization of slavery.”
Board member Brandon Hall said dropping “brutal” would be “whitewashing and watering down a part of history.” Board member Will Hickman countered that “military battles and wars are all brutal, but we have not described any others that way.”
The Republican-majority board approved the language over objections from Democratic members, Muslim groups, and three board-appointed curriculum experts. Districts set their own lesson specifics but must follow the standards, which phase in starting in the 2030-31 school year.
Ross Fire Still Burning, 57% Contained
The Ross Fire is 57% contained after burning more than 90,400 acres in Palo Pinto and Jack counties since Aug. 24, making it the largest summertime wildfire in Texas since statewide records began in 2005.
The Texas A&M Forest Service says the fire has destroyed 167 structures, including 18 occupied homes, and damaged 95 more. Buildings at Worth Ranch, a Scouting America camp, sustained catastrophic damage. No campers were present.
Hundreds of firefighters, engines, and aircraft have worked the blaze. Jack County lifted mandatory evacuations a day after ordering them, and school districts resumed normal operations by Aug. 31.
Drought keeps statewide wildfire potential high after more than 1,000 fires burned 300,000 acres this year. “The dry grass and vegetation provide a lot of fuel,” said UT Arlington assistant professor Yunyao Li.
Free Eggs Coming to Food Banks
The South Plains Food Bank in Lubbock and the High Plains Food Bank in Amarillo will each receive 140,400 free eggs, part of a statewide handout of more than 7 million eggs, Attorney General Ken Paxton announced Tuesday.
The West Texas Food Bank in Odessa is due 280,800, while Houston’s leads all 17 participating food banks with 1,544,400. More than 1.7 million eggs have already been delivered, with 5.3 million scheduled in the coming weeks through Feeding Texas.
The eggs stem from June settlements with Cal-Maine Foods, Centrum/Versova, and Hickman’s Egg Ranch that resolved antitrust claims by the Justice Department and state attorneys general over an alleged conspiracy to inflate egg prices between 2022 and 2025.
Paxton’s office said the producers placed repeated, elevated bids that pushed up Urner Barry’s daily quotes, an industry benchmark. The companies will also pay $3.3 million to participating states.
