First Project Homecoming Flight Departs Houston
The Trump administration’s Project Homecoming initiative, in which illegal immigrants are offered $1,000 to return to their home countries, chartered its first flight out of Houston on Monday with 64 Honduran and Colombian nationals.
The initiative was announced by the White House earlier this month, offering illegal immigrants who self-deport a $1,000 stipend and the opportunity to reenter the country legally in the future.
Trump claimed the program would “save American taxpayers billions and billions of dollars.” It costs about $17,000 to arrest, detain, and deport an illegal immigrant, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
In a social media post, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem urged those in the country illegally to “take control of your departure and receive financial support to return home,” warning that those who don’t would face fines, arrest, deportation, and lose any chance of returning.
Uvalde Strong Act Passes Legislature
The Texas Senate unanimously approved the Uvalde Strong Act, a measure that aims to address failures in the law enforcement response to the 2022 Robb Elementary School shooting that killed 21 people.
House Bill 33, authored by former Uvalde mayor and first-term Republican State Rep. Don McLaughlin, requires local law enforcement and school districts to develop active shooter response plans. It also mandates regular training and incident reports.
“This is about keeping our schools safer and making sure law enforcement and first responders are never set up to fail,” McLaughlin said. The bill awaits Gov. Abbott’s signature.
On May 24, 2022, nearly 400 officers from multiple agencies waited over an hour to confront a gunman who took the lives of two teachers and 19 students. Two former district officials have been charged with child endangerment.
TxDOT Finds Giant Sloth Tooth
TxDOT crews unearthed the fossilized remains of a giant ground sloth and perhaps other ancient megafauna while doing survey work for the construction of Loop 88 near Lubbock.
Chris Ringstaff, a project planner with TxDOT’s environmental affairs division, identified the sloth by its distinctive tooth. He said paleontologists are analyzing the fossils to determine if any belong to other large animals, such as mammoths or mastodons.
The extinct giant ground sloth stood up to 9 feet tall and weighed over 500 pounds. “We’re here to get the road built, but who doesn’t love digging up big ol’ animals?” said Ringstaff.
Crews will also look for signs of human activity, which would require steps to preserve the site’s history. The Museum of Texas Tech University is assisting TxDOT with identifying and housing the remains.
