Gov. Abbott Calls Special Session
The special session called by Gov. Greg Abbott is set to take place on Monday, with 18 items for consideration by lawmakers.
The agenda includes measures to improve flood warning systems and communications, relief funding for flood victims, redistricting efforts, regulation of hemp-based THC products, and more.
The meeting drew national attention with Abbott’s redistricting announcement after Trump urged changes to Texas maps favoring Republicans in the 2026 midterms.
Special sessions last up to 30 days and focus only on topics set by the governor. Abbott has 10 days to veto a bill passed during the session, or it becomes law. You can see the full agenda here.
Inspiring Stories Emerge from Flood Volunteers
Inspiring stories continue to surface three weeks after the floods, including one about a grandmother who launched a Facebook group to help people recover cherished items lost in the rising waters.
Dondi Persyn, who lives near the Guadalupe River, created the group, which has since attracted more than 20,000 members sharing found objects and heartfelt requests. Persyn says they treat each item like “it’s extra, super special.”
Virginia firefighter Matthew Rafferty found a mud-soaked baby quilt during recovery efforts. He cleaned it, shared it online, and personally returned it to its owner.
Multiple organizations are leading efforts to help flood victims recover. If you or someone you know is in a position to volunteer, you can find more information here.
