A new survey of the safest states in America has ranked Texas No. 48, topping only Mississippi and Louisiana.

The study analyzed each state based on 52 criteria, including assaults per capita, financial losses from disasters per resident, and economic factors like unemployment.

Texas’ highest-rated attribute was workplace safety, ranked the 33rd-best in the country. Texas’ worst-rated attribute was emergency preparedness, ranking 48th out of 50.

Texas’ average rating across all criteria was 38. You can see the full list of states and more information on Texas’ ranking here.

Gov. Greg Abbott directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to activate state emergency resources ahead of a growing wildfire risk and potential flood risk in parts of the state.

According to the Texas A&M Forest Service, dry vegetation across the eastern half of the state, with increased winds and higher temperatures, has created an elevated risk for wildfires.

Heavy rainfall from storms in the eastern Pacific moving northward over Mexico and into Far West Texas could lead to flash flooding over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Texans can inform themselves on how to prepare for wildfire or flood conditions here.

Ryan Niblett’s 75-yard punt return touchdown in the fourth quarter punctuated Texas’ 23-6 win over No. 6 Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry.

The Longhorns fell behind Oklahoma 6-0 in the second quarter before scoring 23 unanswered points. A 12-yard pass from Arch Manning to DeAndre Moore Jr., the Longhorns’ only offensive touchdown of the day, gave Texas its first lead in the third quarter.

Texas intercepted John Mateer three times and held the Sooners to 48 rushing yards on 30 attempts, an average of 1.6 yards per carry.

It was the first time the Longhorns won consecutive Red River games since 2008–09. Texas will travel to Kentucky next weekend.
