Defense Opens in Karmelo Anthony Trial
Texas prosecutors rested their case Saturday in the murder trial of Karmelo Anthony, 19, accused of fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a Frisco high school track meet last year.
After four days of testimony—including autopsy details, teen eyewitnesses, and a medical examiner—the defense began presenting its case Saturday, arguing Anthony acted in self-defense. Anthony faces up to life in prison if convicted.
The defense opened by calling three witnesses—Anthony’s track coach, a teammate, and a Memorial student—all of whom reinforced that athletes routinely mingled under other teams’ tents, while the coach also highlighted Anthony’s 2024 Team Captain Award.
Mayor Advocates for Selling City Hall
Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson unveiled a proposal to sell City Hall, arguing that the move would help save the city money for downtown redevelopment and perhaps anchor a bid to keep the Dallas Stars from moving to Plano.
The Mavericks entered into an option agreement for a $50.76 million land deal at the former Valley View site off the LBJ Freeway and Dallas North Tollway in Dallas, while the Stars have said they intend to build a new arena in Plano, along with restaurants, residential units, and retail shops in the Willow Bend Mall area.
The mayor said that the teams’ decisions to move out of downtown are not yet final: “The Valley View site that the Mavericks are looking at, it’s in Dallas, that’s a good thing. … But as far as the Stars are concerned … from my understanding, it is a letter of intent. It is not a final deal.”
Mayor Johnson argued that selling the beloved building—a target of preservation advocates—could fund a revitalized downtown core, which may convince the sports franchises and others to stay downtown.
Spurs Face Must-Win Game 3 Tonight
The San Antonio Spurs head to Madison Square Garden tonight trailing 2-0 in the best-of-seven series, after Victor Wembanyama’s late miscommunication with Stephon Castle handed the Knicks a one-point Game 2 win in San Antonio.
The Knicks are picked to win the series by oddsmakers. A loss tonight would put San Antonio in a 0-3 hole, which no team has ever overcome in the NBA finals.
President Trump is planning to attend tonight’s game at the Garden, which would be the first time a sitting president has attended an NBA Finals game. His presence will require fans to adjust to delays and rule changes due to security concerns.
