Article Icon 1Judge Blocks Paxton’s ActBlue Suit

A federal judge Thursday blocked Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, R, from pursuing his lawsuit against Democrat fundraising platform ActBlue, granting a preliminary injunction on free speech grounds.

District Judge Richard Stearns ruled the suit was retaliation for ActBlue’s fundraising for state Rep. James Talarico, D-Austin, who is challenging Paxton for a U.S. Senate seat.

Stearns noted Paxton’s 2023 investigation sat dormant until Talarico raised over $2.5 million in 24 hours after a TV appearance, about $2.2 million through ActBlue.

The ruling bars Paxton from refiling. His office alleged the platform allowed foreign and fraudulent donations.

Texas Republicans ousted party Chairman Abraham George at their state convention in Houston on Friday, replacing him with his former running mate, D’Rinda Randall, giving the party its fifth chair in six years.

Randall, who served as vice chair under George, defeated him after delegates expressed frustration that he was too close to the party’s establishment wing. David Covey will serve as her vice chair.

The convention also advanced a harder-line platform, with delegates backing priorities including closing the state’s primary system and restricting the spread of Islamic law. Governor Greg Abbott used his keynote to outline a fourth-term agenda, vowing to “demolish the Democrats” and push restrictions on H-1B visas.

The multiday event at Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center drew thousands of delegates and concluded on Saturday.

Article Icon 1Spurs Fall Short in Finals

The San Antonio Spurs surrendered another double-digit lead to the Knicks, falling 94-90 at home as New York snapped a 53-year championship drought.

A 15-2 run late in the fourth quarter gave New York its first lead since the opening period, and Jalen Brunson’s floater with a minute to go kept the Knicks ahead after the Spurs had fought back to tie.

Dylan Harper led the Spurs with 25 points off the bench, but Brunson topped all scorers with 45 points and was named the NBA Finals MVP.

It’s New York’s third NBA championship, following titles in 1970 and 1973.
