Article Icon 1Midland Gunman Dead After Standoff

The gunman who killed one person and wounded 10 others in Midland on Friday morning was found dead inside an abandoned veterinary clinic after an hourslong standoff with police.

DPS identified the suspect as Victor Mata Villarreal, 45, of Odessa, who fired at officers and bystanders along West Wall Street before barricading himself around 8 a.m. He was found dead about 12:30 p.m.; no officers were injured.

The Ector County sheriff said Villarreal is the same suspect linked to a police shooting Wednesday. The Texas Rangers are investigating, and Business 20 may stay closed through the weekend.

Article Icon 1GOP Close Ranks in Houston

Texas Republicans projected a united front Friday as Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, House Speaker Dustin Burrows, and U.S. Senate nominee Ken Paxton addressed the state GOP convention in Houston.

Abbott, in a social media post, declared Republicans “UNITED and ready” to win in November.

Party Chair Abraham George touted 43 legislative priorities passed since 2024 but said the failure to close GOP primaries to non-Republicans “must end.”

One lingering feud eased last week when Secretary of State Jane Nelson, whom the party sued over its closed-primary push, announced she will resign effective July 17. Delegates elect leadership and adopt a platform before the convention wraps today.

Article Icon 1World Cup Lands in Texas Tomorrow

Texas hosts its first World Cup matches Sunday, when Germany meets Curaçao at noon at Houston’s NRG Stadium and the Netherlands faces Japan at 3 p.m. at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

The tournament opened Thursday in Mexico City, where Julián Quiñones scored the Cup’s first goal in Mexico’s 2-0 win over South Africa.

One note of caution: forecasters warn of a dangerous heat index for Sunday’s Arlington match, so hydrate early and often if you’re headed out.

AI’s 80,000-Ton Battery Problem

As AI infrastructure explodes, so does lithium demand. Google’s AI data centers currently use 100M+ lithium-ion cells for reliable, always-on power.

The problem? Big Tech’s race to build massive new data center capacity has Morgan Stanley forecasting an 80k-ton lithium shortage this year.

Few companies are better positioned to benefit than EnergyX. Their patented tech produces up to 3X more lithium than traditional methods at speeds 500X faster than evaporation ponds.

Beyond the tech, they have rights to ~150,000 acres of lithium-rich land across North and South America, and they’ve just announced plans for their second lithium production plant in America. Now, they hold rights to up to 13M tons of lithium across North and South America.

Industry leaders like General Motors and POSCO have already invested. Join them as an early-stage EnergyX shareholder before the 7/16 deadline.
