Trump Knocks Texas Data Center Pause

President Trump called Texas’ data center pushback a mistake in an interview released on Friday, saying the industry “could be bigger than oil.”

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott paused new grid connections on Monday after fewer than 10% of data centers answered state questions on power and water use, with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) tracking a 500%-plus jump in peak demand. 

“Simply put, Texans must come first,” spokesman Andrew Mahaleris said.

The fight is spreading: San Antonio council members want a citywide moratorium, Temple is reviewing its rules, and Democratic gubernatorial nominee Gina Hinojosa says “no one buys it.”

Heat Cranks up for Tax-Free Weekend

Texans braving tax-free weekend crowds will shop in upper-90s heat through Sunday, the last day of the state’s Aug. 7-9 sales-tax holiday, with rain chances of just 10-20% and better odds east of I-35.

The heat builds from there. Laredo is already posting heat indices near 110°, and as the atmosphere dries early next week, forecasters say highs may top 100°.

The timing matters for schools. With fall practices underway, the University Interscholastic League requires districts to track wet bulb globe temperatures.

Buc-ee’s Speaks Out in Beaver Battle

Buc-ee’s founder Arch Aplin has spoken publicly for the first time about the chain’s trademark suit against Beaver’s Mini Mart, an Ohio store whose smiling beaver logo Buc-ee’s claims mimics its own.

Huber Heights Mayor Jeff Gore said Aplin told him the Lake Jackson company has no problem with a beaver logo used locally; what it won’t accept is a series of Beavermarts “popping up across the state.”

A GoFundMe for the mart has topped $45,000, and a Friday cash mob urged shoppers to spend at least $20, the latest pushback against a chain with several similar suits nationwide.
