Texas Officer Jailed in Mexico Killings

Mexican authorities arrested Santa Anna reserve police officer Chad Eberle at the border Tuesday, hours after a shooting in Saltillo left three people dead.

Eberle, 35, had gone to a home in the Coahuila capital to take custody of his 3-year-old son without permission, according to the Mexican newspaper La Razón. Two women and a man were killed, and the boy’s mother was critically wounded.

Eberle drove north with the boy and was stopped at International Bridge II in Piedras Negras, across the river from Eagle Pass. He faces homicide charges and is held at the Saltillo Men’s Penitentiary.

Police Chief Ryan Tucker said the arrest “was a shock” and that Eberle is on unpaid administrative leave. State licensing records show he previously worked for the Bexar County Precinct 2 constable’s office, Northside ISD, and the Somerset and Bangs police departments.

Cruz Bill Stalls Before Senate Recess

A handful of senators objected Friday to a quick vote on Sen. Ted Cruz’s college sports bill, threatening to push the measure to September.

The Protect College Sports Act, co-authored by Cruz and Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Washington, would close a loophole that let booster collectives route endorsement money around the $21.3 million cap schools use to pay athletes directly.

The bill gained momentum last week when the SEC and Big Ten dropped their opposition after negotiators added a $27.5 million retention and Olympic sports pool. “We listened to our colleagues, addressed their concerns, and improved an already strong bill,” Cruz said.

Not every Texan is sold. The chairs of the University of Texas and Texas A&M regent boards wrote Cruz and Sen. John Cornyn in June opposing an earlier draft, and Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Georgia, called the rules complicated and asked for more time.

Dallas Budget Cuts Jobs, Boosts Police

Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert will send the City Council a $5.66 billion budget Tuesday that eliminates dozens of positions while funding hundreds of new police officers.

The city is closing a $51 million shortfall after sales tax collections came in below projections. Tolbert told employees in a Friday video that change is the new normal and warned the plan reaches their jobs.

Libraries take the hardest hit. The overview eliminates 72 library positions, some already vacant, shifts adult learning to outside partners, and reorganizes branches around five flagship locations.

Police funding rises, with money for 360 officers in fiscal year 2026-27 and 339 the following fiscal year, toward a force of 3,800. Tolbert called the cuts hard because “behind every line item is a person.”
