Good Morning! On this day in 1862, Confederate cavalry attacked a camp of German Unionists fleeing toward Mexico along the Nueces River in present-day Kinney County. Nineteen died in the fighting, and the Confederates executed nine wounded men hours later.

A Texas appeals court upheld the State Fair of Texas’ handgun ban Thursday, ruling that a state law limiting gun bans on public property doesn’t reach private groups.
The 15th Court of Appeals affirmed a Dallas County judge’s dismissal of a lawsuit by Attorney General Ken Paxton and three licensed handgun holders. Dallas owns Fair Park but leases it to the nonprofit fair each fall.
Judges found the city didn’t create, direct, or enforce the policy. Fair President Mitchell Glieber testified that no city official helped develop it. The fair banned firearms in 2024 after a man without a carry license opened fire at the 2023 fair, wounding three.
Chris McNutt of Texas Gun Rights said the policy “does nothing to stop criminals” and turns “peaceable Texans into sitting ducks.” Paxton, who argued a government “cannot contract away our rights,” can appeal to the Texas Supreme Court.
Alligators Shot at Fort Worth Refuge
Texas game wardens are offering a $1,000 reward for information on whoever shot three alligators at the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge on Lake Worth. Two died between May and July and were left to waste. A nesting female survived with a crossbow bolt in her neck.
One animal, a young alligator tagged for a study by refuge manager Jared Wood, was found floating with a gunshot wound to the head. The other carcass looked like someone had tried to twist the head off the spine.
“It’s extremely unfortunate that people would take advantage of doing that to a keystone, protected species on public land,” Wood said. Hunting isn’t allowed at the refuge, and alligator hunting elsewhere in Texas runs only during set seasons.
Wardens and Lake Worth marshals have stepped up random patrols. Tips can be reported to Operation Game Thief at 1-800-792-4263, and callers can remain anonymous.
Mavericks Legend Don Nelson Dies
Don Nelson, the coach who drafted Dirk Nowitzki and turned the Dallas Mavericks into a Western Conference power, died Sunday at 86.
Nelson took over a Dallas team that had won more than 30 games only once in the 1990s. He and his son Donnie hid Nowitzki in a basement before the 1998 draft to keep other teams from getting a look.
“We made a commitment that we were going to draft him,”Nelson said. “He was going to be ours.”
The Mavs traded for Steve Nash that same night, and by 2003, they were winning 60 games. Nelson won five titles as a Celtics player, coached 31 seasons, won Coach of the Year three times, and retired in 2010 with 1,335 wins, the most ever at the time.
His family said he died surrounded by relatives. A celebration of life is set for Thursday, Aug. 13, at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas.
