Article Icon 1Texas Juvenile Prisons Blasted By DOJ

The U.S. Department of Justice released a 73-page report on Thursday accusing the Texas Juvenile Justice Department of violating the civil and constitutional rights of children detained in their five facilities across the state.

The report details how children are routinely subjected to isolation, excessive force, and sexual abuse while being denied access to special education or mental health treatment.

The U.S. Attorney General’s Office began an investigation into Texas’ juvenile detention centers in 2021, visiting facilities and interviewing hundreds of children, staff, teachers, and clinicians.

The agency did not announce any enforcement actions against the state but recommended a series of changes to improve conditions in the facilities.

Several Central Texas cities, including Waco and Belton, are participating in a federally funded program that could provide low-income families with a brand new home.

The federally funded HOME Investment Partnerships Program aims to replace substandard housing with new builds—typically with three bedrooms and two bathrooms—on the same lots.

Applicants must prove they own their property and don’t have any liens on it, and their income must be between 30 and 80 percent of the median income in their area.

If approved for a new home, they must agree to live there for at least five years before selling the property.

Article Icon 1Texas Among Youngest U.S. States

Texas is currently the fourth-youngest state in the U.S., according to BizInsure’s “Aging in America” report.

Despite an expected increase in its senior population, Texas is projected to maintain its position as one of the youngest states through 2100.

Texas’s young population is driven by high births, millennials moving into the state, and immigration.

By 2050, Texas is forecast to become the third-youngest state, with just 16.7% of its population aged 65 or older.
