Landowners Push Back On Federal “Land Grab”
Panhandle landowners are pushing back on a Biden administration plan to expand the Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge from 6,440 to 700,000 acres through voluntary conservation easements, which some critics have characterized as a “land grab.”
The plan aims to provide migratory birds with a place to nest during the winter, but U.S. Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-Lubbock) says he fears landowners would be pressured into relinquishing their property rights and could be forced to pay higher taxes on diminished property values.
Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge is one of three in Texas the federal government has proposed expanding as part of Biden’s $1 billion “America the Beautiful” initiative, which seeks to conserve and restore at least 30% of U.S. lands and waters by 2030.
