The Roundup

Article Icon 1Beryl Tracking Toward Texas

Hurricane Beryl is expected to make landfall near the Texas-Mexico border on Monday morning after it moves across the Yucatan Peninsula and the Gulf of Mexico this weekend.

Beryl peaked as a Category 5 hurricane on Tuesday before lashing Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. While it should weaken to a tropical storm over the Yucatan, it could become a Category 1 hurricane or stronger before making a second landfall near Brownsville.

Where Beryl comes ashore and how strong it will be will depend on the movement of a high-pressure system to the north and the degree to which upper-level winds over the Gulf diminish the storm’s intensity. In any situation, Texans along the coast should prepare for strong winds and several inches of rain.

In anticipation of the storm’s impact, Gov. Abbott has directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to prepare emergency resources and personnel for potential deployment, and Cameron County has issued a voluntary evacuation order.

Article Icon 1Luxury Retailers Team Up

Dallas-based Neiman Marcus is being acquired by the parent company of rival luxury retailer Saks Fifth Avenue for $2.65 billion.

The blockbuster deal is being facilitated by Amazon, which will become a minority owner of the new Saks Global and will provide “technology and logistics services,” according to sources.

Neiman Marcus filed for bankruptcy in 2020 and has been owned by several private equity firms in recent years. In May, the company cut dozens of jobs at its corporate headquarters.

If regulators approve the deal, the new company would operate 175 stores with about $10 billion in annual sales.

Article Icon 13 Texas Cities Named Most Affordable in U.S.

Three Texas cities made a list of the most affordable in the U.S. McKinney led the way at No. 1, followed by Midland at No. 4 and Austin at No. 7.

McKinney’s income-to-expense ratio is 1.60, while Midland’s is 1.27 and Austin’s is 1.21.
