The Roundup

Article Icon 1Abbott to Deploy National Guard

Gov. Greg Abbott announced late Tuesday he would deploy the National Guard to multiple locations across the state to “ensure peace & order” where demonstrations against President Trump and his policies are planned for Saturday.

Peaceful protest is legal. Harming a person or property is illegal & will lead to arrest. [Texas National Guard] will use every tool & strategy to help law enforcement maintain order,” Abbott posted on social media.

Immigration enforcement operations in Los Angeles over the weekend sparked riots there and protests across the country in recent days, including several major cities in Texas. Four police officers were injured and over a dozen protesters arrested during an Austin protest on Monday.

Around 1,800 “No Kings” protests are scheduled across the country for Saturday, when a military parade in Washington, D.C., will mark the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday. Abbott has declined to disclose how many National Guard soldiers will be deployed.

Article Icon 1Fort Cavazos Renamed Fort Hood

Fort Cavazos in Killeen will once again be known as Fort Hood, as President Trump announced Tuesday that he would restore the names of seven Army installations previously named after Confederate military leaders.

The post’s new namesake is Distinguished Service Cross recipient Col. Robert B. Hood, who served with the Army’s 12th Field Artillery during World War I. He was honored for activating a battery under heavy gunfire near Thiaucourt, France.

Established in 1942, Fort Hood was originally named after Gen. John Bell Hood, who led the Texas Brigade during the Civil War. Its name was changed in 2023 following federal legislation that barred U.S. military posts from bearing the names of Confederate soldiers.

Texas native and Medal of Honor recipient Richard E. Cavazos was chosen as the installation’s namesake after Congress overrode President Trump’s veto of the legislation stripping the names of Confederate leaders from U.S. military posts in the final days of his first term.

Article Icon 1Lawmakers Aim to Boost, Fortify Power Grid

The Texas Legislature passed several bills aimed at boosting the state’s energy supply and ensuring the power grid’s resilience amid increasing demand and growing security threats.

Senate Bill 6 authorizes ERCOT to shut off power to facilities that use at least 75 megawatts of electricity during an emergency with a 24-hour notice. Developers of high-demand projects must also pay $100,000 for a study to determine the infrastructure needed to connect to the grid.

Lawmakers also allocated $5 billion to the Texas Energy Fund for new power generation projects, including $1.8 billion earmarked for small-scale projects like battery backup systems. A new office was established to administer $350 million in funding for nuclear energy projects.

House Bill 5323 establishes the Texas Energy Waste Advisory Committee, a collaboration of eight state agencies tasked with coordinating demand reduction programs. Senate Bill 75 creates the Texas Grid Security Commission to address vulnerabilities to natural and man-made disasters.
