Article Icon 1Redistricting Hearings Continue

The Texas House redistricting committee held a hearing at the UT Arlington campus on Monday. Nearly everyone who testified opposed the Republican-led effort to redraw the state’s congressional districts. More than 450 people attended the hearing.

Meanwhile, a Texas Senate panel conducted virtual hearings on Monday and Tuesday for East Texas, Houston, the Panhandle, and El Paso. Democrats have complained about the lack of a proposed map to review.

Today, U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York) is meeting with Texas Democrats in Austin to discuss redistricting. He has reportedly urged them to consider breaking quorum to stop Republicans from approving a new map.

The Democratic National Committee is deploying 30,000 volunteers to urge “persuadable Republican Texas voters” to oppose the redistricting effort. Governors in Democrat-led states have threatened to redraw their districts in response to President Trump’s calls to boost the number of GOP seats in Texas and other Republican states.

Article Icon 1Kerrville Records Reveal Confusion, Political Bias

Records obtained by an Austin news outlet reveal Kerrville Mayor Joe Herring received an email from the Texas Division of Emergency Management on July 2 to participate in a “Situational Awareness Call for Severe Weather” the following day, despite previously claiming he “wasn’t invited to the call.”

Other records obtained by a San Antonio news outlet reveal that a call for off-duty firefighters was not sent until 8:55 a.m. on July 4—hours after flash floods had created a disaster situation.

Additional information shows that Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice referred to U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem as “basically homeland Barbie.”

Kerrville has implemented Stage 4 water restrictions following the declaration of a water supply emergency due to flood damage at the city’s water treatment plant. The city said in a statement that “there are no concerns regarding the quality of the treated water being provided.”

Article Icon 1Shipley Do-Nuts Sold, Plans 40 New Stores

Houston-based Shipley Do-Nuts has been acquired from Austin-based Peak Rock Capital, which has owned the chain since 2021, by a California private equity firm. The terms of the sale to Levine Leichtman Capital Partners were not disclosed.

Founded in 1936, Shipley has seen significant growth since its acquisition by Peak Rock, expanding from over 300 locations in nine states to more than 375 across 14 states. The company plans to open over 40 new locations by the end of the year.

According to CEO Flynn Dekker, who joined the company in 2023, more than 90% of Shipley stores are franchised. The brand is currently innovating its drink menu and incorporating AI into its online ordering platform.

Last year, Levine Leichtman sold Tropical Smoothie Cafe for $2 billion after adding 500 units. Dekker insists that despite the chain’s acquisition by a California firm, Shipley will remain true to its roots, “bringing that Houston culture” to new markets.
