Article Icon 1Cowboys, Texans NFL Draft Highlights

The Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans each added nine players to their rosters during last week’s NFL Draft, aiming to plug holes and land long-term playmakers.

The Cowboys selected Alabama offensive lineman Tyler Booker with the 12th overall pick to replace retiring guard Zack Martin. Their second and third round picks—Boston College pass rusher Donovan Ezeiruaku and East Carolina cornerback Shavon Revel Jr.—were both expected to go earlier.

The Houston Texans selected two wide receivers in their first three picks—Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel, both from Iowa State. They’ll add depth to a receiving corps led by Nico Collins.

The Texans also added Minnesota offensive tackle Aireontae Ersery, bolstering an offensive line that was one of the worst in the league last year and was left with a gaping hole after veteran Laremy Tunsil was traded to the Washington Commanders.

Article Icon 1Megachurch Leaders Accused of Power Grab

Members of Houston’s Second Baptist Church have filed a lawsuit accusing church leaders of secretly changing the organization’s bylaws so that they could seize control of its assets, which exceed $1 billion.

Last May, Ed Young resigned as pastor of the 94,000-member, six-campus megachurch after 46 years leading the community, appointing his son Ben Young as his successor. Before he stepped down, however, he helped orchestrate revisions to the bylaws that allegedly denied members the right to vote on a new pastor.

The lawsuit claims that though the changes were ostensibly intended to clarify the church’s beliefs on contentious cultural issues, the real objective was to ensure family succession and consolidate “power and control over church governance and church assets.”

The day after Ben Young was installed as the church’s pastor, he reportedly ordered his father to “cease his involvement in the church” and fired the headmaster of the church’s K-12 school.

San Antonio-based USAA, the top-ranked financial services company and the No. 15 company overall, was recognized for its disaster relief efforts and support for mental health in the military community.

Dallas-based Mary Kay (No. 9 overall) earned the top spot in the cosmetics and skin care category, while Buc-ee’s (No. 46 overall) was the top-ranked convenience store. Brenham-based Blue Bell Ice Cream (No. 62 overall) was the top food and beverage company.
