Article Icon 1Texas Man Sues Delta Over Crash

Marthinus Lourens of Central Texas is one of two passengers to file the first lawsuits against Delta Air Lines after one of its regional jets flipped over during landing at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport last week.

Everyone on board the flight survived the crash in spite of numerous injuries. In a filing, Lourens stated he “was violently tossed about and ended up upside down hanging from his seatbelt inside a burning plane with aviation fuel leaking on to him,” and he “suffered additional physical injuries when he released his seatbelt and fell to the ceiling of the upside-down aircraft.”

Despite his injuries, Lourens helped open the emergency exit for fellow passengers to get off the plane. The lawsuit accuses Delta of negligence and seeks damages for physical injuries, mental anguish, and future medical costs.

Delta has offered to pay each of the 76 passengers on the flight an unconditional $30,000. Lourens’s attorney said he and his client are evaluating the offer.

A 15-year-old Houston boy shot his mother and sister multiple times after experiencing a “bad reaction” to eating “a bunch” of marijuana edibles Saturday evening, according to police.

When the unnamed teen called 911 and threatened to kill himself or someone else, authorities were dispatched to the residence, where he pointed a gun at them before fleeing. His mother and 17-year-old sister were taken to the hospital in “very critical” condition with multiple gunshot wounds.

The suspect was apprehended after a brief chase. His 16-year-old sister was also home at the time of the shooting, but she was not harmed.

Police have not indicated how the teen obtained the edibles.

Article Icon 1Whooping Crane Festival Draws Thousands

Port Aransas hosted the 28th annual Whooping Crane Festival this past weekend, drawing thousands of birdwatchers from around the world to observe the endangered species, which migrate from Canada to the Coastal Bend each winter.

Standing at five feet tall, the whooping crane is North America’s tallest bird. There were only 15 in existence when it was added to the endangered species list in the 1940s. Since then, its numbers have increased to about 830 worldwide, 550 of which live part of the year in Texas.

This is the only place in the world where people can see the last naturally occurring population of whooping cranes,” said Joan Garland, a training coordinator at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute.
