Article Icon 1Texas A&M Joining New Accrediting Commission

The Texas A&M University System, along with five other public higher education systems from Republican-led states, is forming the Commission for Public Higher Education. The new accrediting body aims to “upend the monopoly of the woke accreditation cartels,” according to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The state university systems of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee will join Texas A&M to form the commission.

To receive federal funding, colleges and universities must be accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. In April, President Trump signed an executive order directing the U.S. Education Secretary to expand the list of recognized accreditors to increase “intellectual diversity.”

Incoming Texas A&M Chancellor Glenn Hegar hailed the development as a “less cumbersome and more objective option for accreditation.” State lawmakers recently passed legislation that allows Texas schools more flexibility in choosing which accreditation agency they work with.

Article Icon 1Conflict Over Marvin Nichols Reservoir Heats Up

The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) directed water planners for Dallas-Fort Worth and Northeast Texas to resolve a dispute over the proposed 66,000-acre Marvin Nichols Reservoir, officially declaring an interregional conflict for the third time since 2011.

The $7 billion Marvin Nichols Reservoir would be built in Region D, consisting of 19 counties in Northeast Texas, to supply water for the fast-growing Metroplex in Region C. Many Northeast Texans oppose building the reservoir over concerns about displacements and its impact on their economy.

TWDB has tasked representatives from each region with mediating a solution under the oversight of executive administrator Bryan McMath, who can propose a resolution if mediation is unsuccessful.

In early May, TWDB received about 370 public comments about draft updates to the state water plan, 98% of which opposed building Marvin Nichols Reservoir. Region C chairman Dan Buhman acknowledged that planners recognize “there are real impacts to real individuals.”

Article Icon 1Corpus Christi Celebrates New Harbor Bridge

The new Harbor Bridge in Corpus Christi, which opened to southbound traffic over the weekend, is the longest cable-stayed bridge in the United States. The 1,661-foot bridge replaces a structure built in the 1950s.

The bridge was first proposed in 2001, and construction began in 2016 after years of negotiations with local landowners to secure property rights.

Now the tallest point in South Texas, the landmark is expected to improve safety, accommodate larger cargo ships, reduce traffic congestion, and attract cruise tourism. Unlike the old bridge, the new bridge is designed to accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians.

This will end up continuing the expansion of our economy here in the Coastal Bend area, and it’s worth all the work and the effort that we made together,” State Sen. Juan ‘Chuy’ Hinojosa (D-McAllen) said.
