Good Morning! On this day in 1910, the Texas Industrial Congress was organized at San Antonio with a mission to promote Texas agriculture, commerce, and industry.
Speaking of things made in Texas, a 153-pound alligator gar officially became the largest freshwater fish on record to be caught using ultra-light tackle. Read about it in our story below.
A press conference held by the family of Karmelo Anthony, the 17-year-old accused of killing Austin Metcalf, also 17, was thrown into chaos when the murdered boy’s father showed up.
Jeff Metcalf, Austin’s dad, was escorted out of the press conference under threat of criminal trespass. Its host, Dominique Alexander, said Metcalf’s presence showed “disrespect.”
The press conference was meant to address allegations that more than $450,000 raised for Anthony’s family has been spent improperly, and to allow Anthony’s mother, Kayla Hayes, to read a prepared statement.
Both Alexander and Hayes later insisted that Anthony’s family had not spent any of the money raised, with Hayes adding that her family is living in fear of violent threats.
Texas Grad Schools Among Best in Nation
U.S. News & World Report recently ranked the best graduate schools in the country, and the state of Texas is well represented.
The University of Texas at Austin took the highest rankings in the state across multiple categories, reaching the top 10 overall for its education and engineering schools and scoring No. 14 and No. 16 for its law and business schools, respectively.
Looking at individual programs, UT Austin offers the No. 1 accounting program and the No. 1 petroleum engineering program in the country.
Texas A&M also made the top 100 in all four major categories, ranking at No. 15 for its engineering school.
World Record Fish Caught in Texas
Kentucky fisherman Art Weston made the most of a trip to Texas earlier this month, catching the world’s largest freshwater fish ever using ultra-light tackle.
Weston landed a 7-feet-3-inch 153-pound alligator gar after a two-mile, nearly four-hour chase across Lake Livingston, calling it “the most challenging catch” of his life.
With the catch, which he called “a true 1% likelihood,” Weston added another world record to the 40-plus he already owns.
