The Texas Supreme Court ruled on Friday to dismiss the case against Attorney General Ken Paxton for allegedly seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
The State Bar of Texas, which brought the lawsuit after Paxton challenged former President Joe Biden’s victory in battleground states in 2020, asked for the case’s dismissal when the “nearly identical” charge against Paxton aide Brent Webster was dropped by the court in December.
It’s Paxton’s latest victory in a series of legal wins, as the formerly-embattled Republican called the case a “witch hunt” that “wasted valuable resources.”
The lawsuit dates back to May 2022 and sought to sanction Paxton—an action that could have carried a wide range of consequences, from a private reprimand to disbarment.
NY Doctor Fined For Breaking Texas Abortion Law
A Collin County judge fined New York doctor Maggie Carpenter over $100,000 for prescribing abortion pills to a 20-year-old Texas woman in May of last year. Attorney General Ken Paxton sued Carpenter in December for violating the state’s abortion ban.
Carpenter failed to appear in court for a hearing on the charges, prompting District Judge Bryan Gantt to render a default judgment in favor of prosecutors and issue an injunction prohibiting Carpenter from prescribing abortifacient drugs in Texas again.
Carpenter is the founder of Abortion Coalition for Telemedicine, a national group of abortion providers who have agreed to prescribe mifepristone and misoprostol to women in states that have banned or restricted abortion.
The case is a test of so-called “shield laws” in Democratic states that aim to provide legal protections to doctors who provide abortions to women in states where the procedure is banned.
Texas Leads U.S. in Top Tier Universities
Texas has surpassed all other U.S. states in the number of top-tier research universities, according to a list released Thursday by the American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation.
By adding five institutions with a Tier 1 designation for a total of 16, Texas passed up California and New York, with whom Texas was tied in the previous listing from 2022.
Texas’ new additions include four medical institutions as well as Southern Methodist University.
Tier 1 universities, also called R1, spend at least $50 million on research and award an average of at least 70 research doctorates each year.
