The Roundup

Article Icon 1College Football Preview

There are two weeks left in college football’s regular season, and plenty of Texas teams are positioning themselves for postseason play.

Before next week’s showdown between No. 3 Texas and No. 15 Texas A&M, they’ll try to avoid upsets against Kentucky and Auburn, respectively, with results having enormous implications in the SEC race.

No. 13 SMU has a chance to clinch a berth in the ACC title game with a win at Virginia at 11:00, while a loss opens the door to losing their tie-breaker with Clemson.

Baylor can extend its winning streak to five with a win at Houston in an in-state matchup at 6:00, Texas Tech faces Oklahoma State at 2:30, and UTEP takes a trip to Tennessee fresh off the Vols’ loss to Georgia last week. TCU will look to improve its bowl prospects versus Arizona at 2:00.

Gov. Greg Abbott has prohibited state agencies from making new investments in China and to sell off current holdings “at the first available opportunity,” according to a letter sent Thursday.

Abbott identified China as a foreign adversary posing a financial risk to Texas, citing “belligerent actions across the Southeast Pacific region.”

The governor also noted in the letter that he directed The University of Texas/Texas A&M Investment Management Company, managing a $80 billion investment portfolio, to divest from China earlier this year.

The directive follows a series of moves aimed at the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), including an executive order issued Monday to arrest CCP operatives in the state.`

Article Icon 1TX Supreme Court: Paxton Can’t Be Deposed

The Texas Supreme Court ruled on Friday that Attorney Gen. Ken Paxton can not be questioned under oath in the whistleblower lawsuit against him.

The lawsuit, brought by four former employees of the Office of the Attorney General (OAG), alleges they were fired for reporting Paxton to the FBI for using his office to help real estate investor Nate Paul.

The allegations were central to the impeachment proceedings for Paxton in 2023, a case in which he was acquitted.

In January, Paxton agreed not to contest the whistleblower lawsuit, leading the Supreme Court to overturn a lower court ruling that he be deposed in the case.
