Article Icon 1San Antonio Unveils ‘Project Marvel’

San Antonio has unveiled plans for a significant downtown sports and entertainment district centered around a new Spurs arena, an expanded convention center, and mixed-use developments.

Dubbed “Project Marvel,” the concept includes retail, housing, a convention center hotel, improvements to the Alamodome, and a land bridge over I-37. The project is estimated to cost between $3-4 billion, with potential funding sources including private investments, hotel taxes, and bond proposals.

The timeline for completing the new arena and expanding the convention center is five years, while the land bridge and Alamodome upgrades are expected to take up to 15 years.

Last month, San Antonio and Bexar County signed agreements with the Missions, a minor league baseball team, to build a new downtown ballpark and redevelop the surrounding area.

Freeman F. Martin has been named the new director of the Texas Department of Public Safety. He is succeeding Steve McCraw, who is set to retire at the end of the year.

Currently serving as the senior deputy director, Martin has held numerous roles during his 34-year career with DPS, including trooper, Texas Ranger, and deputy director. He established an anti-gang unit in San Antonio and helped develop the Texas Rangers Major Crime Scene Response Team.

Martin helped lead the agency’s responses to significant incidents, including the Austin serial bomber case, the Sutherland Springs mass shooting, and Hurricane Harvey. Most recently, he played a key role in implementing Operation Lone Star, a multi-year state initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration.

Martin holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and graduated from Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command.

Article Icon 1‘Flying Spiders’ Descend On Southeast Texas

Silky white threads have filled Southeast Texas skies in recent weeks, sparking both fascination and discomfort among residents.

The natural phenomenon, known as “spider ballooning,” occurs when young spiders release silk to catch the wind, allowing them to disperse and find new habitats. Recent cold fronts have brought an influx of “flying” spiders to the region.

Residents have taken to social media to share their reactions to the occurrence, with some describing the spiderlings as “invisible snow,” “alien spores,” “Mother Nature’s dandruff,” and “fallout from Elon’s space test flight.”
