Article Icon 1State Board Advances Bible-based Curriculum

The Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) narrowly advanced a proposal to include Bible-based lessons in public elementary school curriculums, moving closer to adopting the “Bluebonnet” textbook developed by the Texas Education Agency.

The SBOE voted 8-7 Tuesday to give preliminary approval to the curriculum, which incorporates teachings like the Golden Rule and stories from Genesis, after listening to hours of public testimony on Monday. A final vote is scheduled for tomorrow.

Critics argue that the curriculum alienates non-Christian students and violates the constitutional prohibition against the establishment of religion, while proponents say that reading Bible stories improves comprehension of history and teaches morality.

The Bluebonnet textbook, intended for students in kindergarten through fifth grade, was developed in response to a law directing the TEA to create its own free instructional materials. Schools are not required to use the state-developed curriculum but receive additional funding if they do.

The Texas General Land Office has offered President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration the use of a newly purchased 1,400-acre ranch in Starr County as a potential site for detention centers to house illegal aliens being staged for deportation.

In a Tuesday letter, Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham stated that the ranch’s previous owner refused to allow a wall to be built on her land and blocked law enforcement from accessing it, allowing cartel members and violent criminals to use it to victimize migrants.

After the state acquired the ranch, Buckingham granted the Texas Facilities Commission an easement along the Rio Grande to construct a border wall.

As of this writing, President-elect Trump has not responded to the offer.

Article Icon 1Texas Communities Face Water Issues

Communities across the state are facing challenges getting clean water at an affordable price.

In Lindale and Hideaway, customers of an investor-owned water utility called Undine have seen unexplained usage increases of up to 300% on their monthly bills, prompting two of the area’s state lawmakers to call for an investigation.

In Floresville, residents have complained to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality about the brown, sediment-filled water they get from CSWR, a company that operates a well in the area. CSWR has assured customers that the water is filtered and safe to drink.

Meanwhile, in the town of Tecolote, some of the residents don’t even get running water. On Monday, the Jim Wells County Commissioners Court voted down a proposal for the Nueces River Authority to build a well that would provide water to Tecolote’s approximately 1,000 residents.
