The Roundup

Article Icon 1Texas Cities Among Best in Nation for Parks

Plano ranked No. 17 on the list of America’s most populous cities by “ParkScore,” making it the highest-ranked city in Texas.

Cities were ranked based on five characteristics of their local park systems: acreage, access, investment, amenities, and equity. Plano scored high in acreage and access, with 81% of residents living within a 10-minute walk of a park.

The next highest cities were Dallas and Frisco at Nos. 34 and 37, with the two cities having parks near 81% and 71% of residents, respectively.

Austin came in fairly low at No. 54 due to a low amenities score, with many more Texas cities falling below their ranking. You can see the entire list, including the methodology, here.

Article Icon 1Texas Supreme Court Greenlights Paxton Investigation of Migrant Facility

The Texas Supreme Court unanimously granted Attorney General Ken Paxton’s appeal to continue his investigation of a migrant shelter in El Paso.

The facility is accused of violating state law by “knowingly and purposely” housing illegal immigrants and aiding in their introduction into the United States.

The decision followed an appeal by Paxton after a district court judge prevented Paxton’s office from shutting down Annunciation House. The court also granted a permanent injunction blocking records requests from the Attorney General.

The Supreme Court took no stance on the merits of the overall case outside of overturning the district court’s injunction against Paxton. You can read the full ruling here.

Article Icon 1Gov. Greg Abbott Set to Make Decisions on Several Key Bills

The Texas legislative session ends Monday, giving Gov. Greg Abbott until June 22 to sign or veto any bills sent to his desk in the final 10 days, or they become law by default.

Under state law, lawmakers cannot challenge a veto, as only the governor can call a special session after Monday. Gov. Abbott is not expected to call a session for any bill he plans to veto.

Two high-profile bills are being closely watched as Monday approaches: House Bill 1481, which would ban cellphone use in schools, and Senate Bill 3070, which proposes abolishing the Texas Lottery Commission.

If the governor vetoes a bill prior to June 2, the legislature can call a session to override it. You can track any vetoes from Gov. Abbott here.
