Article Icon 1Cruz Endorsed By Prominent Democrat

U.S. Sen Ted Cruz received the endorsement of a prominent Democrat on Tuesday: Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg.

She cited Cruz’s focus on combating violent crime as transcending partisanship, referencing the June murder of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray by illegal immigrants in Houston.

Ogg has clashed with fellow Democratic county leaders and won’t be on November’s ballot after failing to win her party’s support in this year’s primary.

Cruz touted the endorsement from Ogg and several other Democrats in an effort to peel voters away from challenger Collin Allred in what is shaping up to be a close race.

Article Icon 1Hospital Sued For Rescinding Job Offer

A physician assistant is suing Texas Children’s Hospital for $400,000 after relocating her family from California based on a job offer that was later rescinded due to a hiring freeze.

Mojgan Pedram claims she was hired in April, moved in late May, and was then informed the job was on hold despite the hospital being aware of the freeze for two months prior.

On Tuesday, Texas Children’s, the state’s largest pediatric hospital, announced layoffs for 5% of its workforce, around 1,000 employees.

Executives blamed the cuts on declining patient volumes and unforeseen operating costs.

Article Icon 1 Survey: Texas Teachers Are Underpaid, Unhappy

A survey by the Texas State Teachers Association and Sam Houston State University found that 65% of teachers seriously considered leaving the profession last year.

The study revealed widespread dissatisfaction among educators, with 57% believing the public doesn’t have a positive opinion of them.

Texas teachers earn an average of $62,463, about $9,000 below the national average.

The survey revealed that 33% of teachers rely on second jobs during the school year to make ends meet.
