The Roundup

Article Icon 1Hurricane Forecast Updated

Researchers at Colorado State University slightly lowered their forecast for the remainder of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, but they still predict above-average activity compared to other years.

The revised forecast calls for 23 named storms, which is down from the 25 predicted last month but still significantly more than the 14 seen in a typical hurricane season.

As of Thursday, four named storms have formed in the Atlantic or Caribbean, including Hurricanes Beryl and Debby.

The forecast predicts 12 hurricanes, including six major ones, with a 38% chance of striking the Gulf Coast and a 56% chance of hitting anywhere along the U.S. coast.

The world’s largest 3D-printed neighborhood is nearing completion in Wolf Ranch, a development in Georgetown. As of Thursday, 95 out of 100 homes have been finished.

These 1,500 to 2,100-square-foot homes, priced between $450,000 and $600,000, are built using advanced 3D printing technology with a concrete-based material called Lavacrete.

The project aims to offer a faster, potentially cheaper, and more sustainable construction method. Here’s a video.

NASA has contracted the technology’s developer to create a similar construction system for building structures on the Moon.

Article Icon 1Large Cicada Killer Wasps Surge in Texas

Texas is experiencing an uptick in cicada killer wasp sightings this summer, but experts clarify these are not the feared “murder hornets.”

These wasps, measuring up to 1.5 inches long, are emerging to hunt the noisy cicadas that have been active throughout the summer.

Despite assurances from the Montgomery County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension that the increase is “normal for this time of year,” the wasps’ large size and appearance have drawn public attention.

Experts emphasize that these beneficial insects are generally not aggressive towards humans unless threatened.
