Good Morning! On this day in 1836, at least 342 Texans were executed by Mexican soldiers in the Goliad Massacre. Their deaths, in addition to those of the Alamo defenders, became a rallying cry in the fight for Texas independence.
The Fort Worth and River Oaks fire departments rescued a dog named Hank from a 20-foot cistern earlier this month. Check out the heartwarming photos here!

The Texas Senate unanimously approved a $336.1 billion two-year state budget Tuesday. The figure, which includes $99.2 billion in federal funds, represents a 4.5% increase over the current two-year budget, although legislators are expected to draw from the state’s $23 billion surplus to approve additional spending for the current biennium.
About 70% of the budget is allocated for education and healthcare, including $97 billion for public education and $33 billion for higher education. Other expenditures include $4.3 billion for merit-based teacher pay raises, $1 billion for a new school choice program, $6.5 billion for border security, $5 billion for the Texas Energy Fund, $2.5 billion for the Texas Water Fund, and $3 billion for dementia research.
The budget also includes $6.5 billion in new property tax relief on top of $44 billion to extend property tax cuts enacted since 2019. A portion of the new relief would increase the homestead exemption from $100,000 to $140,000, while the rest would be used to “compress” school district tax rates.
The House is expected to take up its version of the budget early next month. A summary of the Senate’s proposed budget can be viewed here.
Paxton Investigating Proposed Islamic Community
Attorney General Ken Paxton announced Tuesday that he is investigating a proposed Islamic community in the Dallas-Fort Worth area over potential violations of consumer protection laws.
Paxton is seeking records from Community Capital Partners, an entity formed by the East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC) to oversee the construction of “EPIC City” in Josephine. Plans for the 402-acre development include 1,000 homes, a K-12 faith-based school, a mosque, elderly housing and assisted living, apartments, clinics, retail shops, a community college, and sports fields.
On Monday, Gov. Greg Abbott said the proposed community “has serious legal issues” and is being investigated by lawmakers and a dozen state agencies. He previously stated that Sharia law and “no-go zones” are prohibited in the state.
Today is Opening Day for the Texas Rangers and the Houston Astros. The Rangers play the Boston Red Sox at home at 3:05 p.m., while the Astros start the season with a 3:10 p.m. home game against the New York Mets.
With a healthy Jacob DeGrom and returning stars Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, and Nathan Eovaldi, the Rangers hope to rebound from a disappointing 2024 season, in which they finished third in the American League West with a 78-84 record, after winning the World Series in 2023.
After trading away perennial stars Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman in the offseason, Houston—also in the AL West—will rely on its strong starting rotation and sluggers Yordan Alvarez and Jose Altuve to power them to another title. Last year, Houston was swept by the Detroit Tigers in the first round of the playoffs after finishing the season atop the AL West with an 88-73 record.
