Good morning! On this day in 1836, the Alamo fell to Mexican forces led by General Santa Anna following a 13-day siege. The death of the nearly 200 defenders inspired many Texans to join the fight for independence. A few weeks later, during the Battle of San Jacinto, Sam Houston’s army killed over 600 of Santa Anna’s troops and immortalized the rallying cry “Remember the Alamo.”

U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner (D-Houston) passed away yesterday morning at his home in Washington, D.C. The 70-year-old’s family described his death as “unexpected.” Turner had attended President Trump’s address at the Capitol the night before.
Turner represented Houston in the Texas House for 27 years before he was elected mayor in 2016. During his two terms, he orchestrated the city’s response to Hurricane Harvey and the COVID-19 pandemic and led initiatives to reduce the city’s debt and implement police reforms.
Turner, who was treated for bone cancer in 2022, succeeded Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee in the U.S. House after she passed away last July. Before his career in politics, he worked in corporate law, having obtained degrees from Harvard Law School and the University of Houston.
Mayor John Whitmire announced his longtime friend’s death during a city council meeting. “This comes as a shock to everyone. I would ask Houstonians to come together. Pray for his family. Join us in celebrating this remarkable public servant.“
Texas Democrats Protest Trump Speech
Several Democratic members of the Texas congressional delegation objected to President Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress Tuesday night.
As Trump recounted Republican victories during the November election, Rep. Al Green of Houston stood up and yelled, “You have no mandate,” waving his cane in defiance. Speaker Mike Johnson advised members to “uphold and maintain decorum in the House.” When Green continued to disrupt the proceedings, Johnson ordered the Sergeant at Arms to remove him.
Green has said he intends to file articles of impeachment against Trump, accusing him of backing “ethnic cleansing” by proposing a plan to redevelop Gaza. A resolution to censure Green was introduced yesterday, and the House is expected to hold a final vote on the measure this morning.
Later in the speech, Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Dallas walked out of the chamber, stating that Trump was “spewing all kinds of nonsense and bulls***.” She was joined by Rep. Veronica Escobar of El Paso, who said she “couldn’t listen to the incessant lies.”
Trump Honors Texans in Congressional Speech
President Trump honored several Texans during his address to Congress on Tuesday night.
Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel, a 13-year-old boy from Houston who has battled cancer since 2018, was recognized as “a young man who truly loves our police” and was sworn in as an honorary Secret Service agent. According to DJ’s father, he has received similar honors from over 900 law enforcement agencies since his cancer diagnosis.
Trump also recognized Border Patrol agent Roberto Ortiz, who shielded his partner from shots fired by suspected Mexican cartel members in January while patrolling the Rio Grande. “Agent Ortiz, we salute you for your great courage for your line of fire that you took,” Trump said.
Aledo teen Elliston Berry, who sat with First Lady Melania Trump during the address, was honored for her efforts advocating for legislation to prohibit the sharing of AI-generated revenge porn, having previously been a victim.
Finally, Trump announced that the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, east of Houston, would be renamed in honor of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray, who was murdered last year by two alleged members of the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang.
