Question: Where in Texas was a monument erected to honor German Unionists killed for resisting conscription into the Confederate Army?

Answer: Comfort. The Treue der Union (“Loyalty to the Union”) Monument in Kendall County was dedicated on August 10, 1866, in memory of about three dozen Union loyalists of German ancestry who were killed during and after a conflict with Confederate forces near the Nueces River four years earlier. The 20-foot obelisk weighs 35,700 pounds and is inscribed with the names of those whose remains are interred at the site. A 36-star American flag is flown perpetually at half-staff.
