Tesla Robotaxi Launches in Dallas, Houston
Tesla has rolled out its Robotaxi service in Dallas and Houston, following its launch in Austin last year. The company posted videos on Saturday of its popular Model Y SUV navigating the two Texas metros, showing no human driver or monitor in the front seats.
The post includes service area maps but no details about fleet size or rates, though Gizmodo published a report claiming just one or two vehicles are in use in the new markets. Early riders report rates less than half those of competing services with human drivers.
Tesla is developing its autonomous Cybercab for the ride-hailing service. Models without steering wheels or side mirrors have been spotted at the company’s Gigafactory in Austin.
Tesla faces stiff competition from Waymo, which currently operates autonomous vehicles in Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Tesla’s service rides can be booked through its Robotaxi app.
Landowners Face Deadline to Oppose Power Line
Residents of 11 counties have until Monday to intervene in an application to build a 765-kilovolt transmission line from Bell County to Schleicher. The project is one of several authorized by lawmakers in 2023 to meet the rising power demand of data centers and the oil and gas industry in West Texas.
Oncor and the Lower Colorado River Authority have proposed 122 potential routes for the Bell County East–Big Hill 765 kV project. The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) is expected to select a route in September, and the transmission lines could be energized by summer 2030.
Intervening in the application allows residents within 500 feet of a proposed route to participate in administrative hearings before a final selection is made. State Rep. Brad Buckley (R-Salado), who voted for the legislation, has criticized engagement with the public about the project as “inadequate.”
“While it is important that our power grid be resilient and the lessons learned from Winter Storm Uri be applied, it is also absolutely critical no project negatively impact property values, land use, quality of life, or the health of local residents,” Buckley said.
Owlet Feared Dead Being Rehabilitated
After Austin’s Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center reported that two recently hatched owlets had died, it clarified yesterday that one of the baby birds is still alive.
The owlets, which hatched earlier this month, are the offspring of longtime resident Athena, a great horned owl that has nested at the center multiple times since 2012. Since then, the only other breeding failure was in 2022, when her eggs didn’t hatch.
The center provides a camera feed of Athena’s nest in partnership with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. In recent days, she has been seen leaving her nest for extended periods at night. Social media users speculated her mate might have died after a dead owl was found in the area.
The surviving owlet was retrieved by Austin Wildlife Rescue and is being rehabilitated. “Early signs are encouraging, and the owlet is showing strength and appetite,” read a post from the center.
