Article Icon 1 Supreme Court Sides with Texas Landowners

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Texas landowners had the right to sue the state for building highway barriers that flooded the property of more than 120 landowners.

During significant flooding in 2017 and 2019, state officials installed a highway barrier on I-10 to dam up the water. However, that diverted the torrential waters into neighboring properties.

After state courts refused to hear the landowners’ compensation case, it went to the Supreme Court. Justice Clarence Thomas ordered Texas to hear the case and allow the appeal for damages.

A federal judge ruled that Texas must pay $100,000 per day for refusing to investigate alleged neglect and abuse of children in the state’s foster care system.

In her 427-page ruling, U.S. District Judge Janis Jack noted that Texas Health and Human Services was previously held in contempt for ignoring the court’s orders. State officials argue they have been in compliance.

The daily fine will end when the Texas HHS shows that investigations have begun and the system complies with the law. A hearing is scheduled for June.

Article Icon 1American Airline Pilots Raise Safety Issues

The union representing pilots for Fort Worth-based American Airlines warned this weekend that there’s been a “significant spike” in safety problems at the company.

The Allied Pilots Association detailed critical issues at the airline’s DFW maintenance hangers, ranging from tools being left in wheel wells to not performing consistent maintenance checks.

The union sent a memo to pilots urging them to take their time to ensure safety:

“Remember: Don’t rush, don’t be intimidated, and don’t be pressured into doing something that doesn’t pass the ‘smell test.”
