Article Icon 1Long Search for Flood Victims Ahead

During a Monday news conference in Leander, Gov. Greg Abbott said that 97 people are missing in Kerr County from the deadly July 4 flash floods, down from the 161 reported last week. He added that 25 states have provided resources and personnel to give aid and search for victims.

Local officials have said it could take up to six months to locate all the victims. “We’ve heard accounts of trailer after trailer after trailer being swept into the river with families in them. Can’t find the trailers,” Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly said Monday.

An AI-powered handheld sonar device developed by startup AquaEye is being used to help search teams. “It will scan the area of a football field in a minute and pinpoint the location of a victim,” said founder and CEO Carlyn Loncaric.

Meanwhile, a statement from the family of Camp Mystic co-owner Dick Eastland, who died trying to rescue campers, revealed that the decision to evacuate the camp was delayed for at least 45 minutes after a flood warning alert was received.

Article Icon 1Trump Weighs in on Texas Redistricting

President Donald Trump said Tuesday he wants Texas lawmakers to redraw the state’s congressional districts so that five Republicans are added to its congressional delegation, which currently consists of 25 Republicans and 12 Democrats. A Democrat-leaning Houston district has been without representation since the death of U.S. Rep. Sylvester Turner in March.

The move could increase the GOP’s odds of retaining control of the U.S. House in next year’s midterm elections. Currently, Republicans hold a 220-213 advantage in the House.

Gov. Greg Abbott has added redistricting to the special session agenda after the Department of Justice identified four “coalition districts” it deemed “unconstitutional racial gerrymanders.” A new map would likely add Republican-leaning voters to these districts, though some analysts believe that could turn safe Republican seats into competitive districts.

“Just a very simple redrawing. We pick up five seats,” Trump said. The Texas Democratic Party has criticized the effort, saying “only losers change the rules in the middle of the game.”

Article Icon 1Austin Releasing Grass-Eating Carp

The city of Austin is releasing 350 sterile grass carp into Lake Austin to control the growth of hydrilla, an invasive aquatic plant covering 74 acres—about 5% of the lake—particularly in coves and backwaters.

Hydrilla is a fast-growing plant native to Asia that was introduced to North America in the 1950s via the aquarium trade. It can obstruct waterways, cause flooding, and hinder navigation for boaters and swimmers.

The plant was first spotted in Lake Austin in 1999, and it covered nearly a third of the lake by 2012. Since 2003, sterile carp have been introduced multiple times, including 56,700 fish in 2021, leading to the destruction of nearly all the lake’s vegetation.
