Article Icon 1More Funding Needed For Energy Projects

Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick are calling on state legislators to double the size of the newly created Texas Energy Fund, citing ERCOT’s projection that the state’s electricity demand will exceed the grid’s capacity in a few years.

Voters approved the creation of the Texas Energy Fund in 2023, authorizing an initial allocation of $5 billion in loans for new power generation projects. In a Monday statement, Abbott and Patrick said the fund has received applications for loans totaling $39 billion.

The average plant will take three to four years to complete, and new transmission lines will take three to six years to complete, according to the statement.

Article Icon 1El Paso Judge Protects Migrant Shelter

In a Tuesday ruling, an El Paso judge denounced Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s efforts to close Annunciation House, one of the largest and oldest migrant shelters on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Paxton alleged the shelter was facilitating illegal immigration by housing migrants regardless of legal status. In February, state officials visited the El Paso shelter and were denied immediate access to migrants’ medical and immigration records.

Judge Francisco X. Dominguez called Paxton’s conduct “outrageous” and characterized his attempts to subpoena migrant records as “harassment and overreaching,” ruling that his actions violated the shelter’s constitutional rights.

Article Icon 1Elderly Woman Demands Refund at Gunpoint

Fort Worth police arrested a 70-year-old woman last week after a bizarre incident at a local Mexican restaurant.

After accusing the employees of Taqueria Mi Ranchito of taking her money, Josefina Luna allegedly pulled a pistol from her bag and pointed it at an employee, demanding a refund.

Luna has been charged with aggravated robbery and is being held on a $25,000 bail.
